Forgotten Treasure

This week's SSUS card challenge was to use a forgotten treasure embellishment like buttons or magic mesh. I can never figure out how to use buttons, so I pulled out the magic mesh. And what better set to pair with magic mesh than Crab & Company? I always think of nautical type images with magic mesh. Maybe it just reminds me of fish nets.

Anyway, I cut out the yellow circles with my coluzzle and then applied the magic mesh. Because the magic mesh is self-adhesive, if you pour glitter on top then it will stick. Pretty cool, isn't it?

After I stamped the crab & packages, I masked off the packages and overstamped with the speckled stamp from Itty Bitty Backgrounds to make the sand match. I also masked off the eyes on the crab before stamping his party hat. I think it's worth the extra work to mask as opposed to sticking the hat above his eyes.

Another Purse

This was one of the make-n-takes at my workshop tonight. My hostess, Lisa, wanted to learn how to make Julie Ebersole's purse cards. The template is available on splitcoast, but you need to be a Stampin' Up! demonstrator to access it. If you aren't a demonstrator, ask your demonstrator to show you how to make it.

This time, I stamped the paisley stamp from Polka Dots & Petals from the spring mini catalog in Chocolate Chip ink on Cool Caribbean card stock. Then, I highlighted the paisleys with my Signo White Gel Pen.

For the flap, I brayered Cool Caribbean ink over the Au Chocolat paper from the spring mini catalog. Linda Heller (LucyStamps on scs), first posted the idea of brayering over the Au Chocolate papers. It makes them so much more versatile!

Easy Baby Cards

I decided to pack lightly when I went to my stamping cape cod retreat last weekend. Aside from all of my swaps and the supplies for my shoebox swap, I only brought some Fabriano Medioevalis folded reply cards, watercolor wonder crayons, aqua painters, the Palette Noir & Palette Burnt Umber ink pads and my bellas.

On our first night there, I borrowed Mary Jo's Bundle of Joy stamp set from the spring mini catalog and came up with these two cards. The Fabriano note cards make it so easy to make beautiful no layer cards. I simply stamped these with the Palette Burnt Umber ink pad and then water colored with my crayons. A little May Arts ribbon from Cindy Lyles store was the perfect final touch.

Now, I'll just tuck these away until my next coworker has a baby. (There's definitely something in the water at my office. We only have 65 employees, but at least 3 babies are born each year. Right now I know of one set of twins on the way.)

Scrap cardstock (for tabs and ovals)

Step by Step

Step 1: Cut a piece of patterned paper to be 3.75" x 1.5". Holding vertically, score 3/16" in from each side. This will go on one side of the box.

Step 2: Cut a piece of patterned paper to be 5.5" x 1.5". Holding vertically, score 3/16" in from each side. This will go on the bottom of the box.

Step 3: Cut a piece of patterned paper to be 3.75" x 12". Then score at 5.5" and 6 5/8". This piece will wrap from the front, around one side to cover most of the back.

Step 4: On the back of the cardstock with a pen, mark 1/2 inch in from the edge and from the first crease. Then using the paper cutter, cut down 1/2" from these two marks.

Step 5: Flip the cardstock around and cut down from the two slits made in the previous step. This will create a 4.5" slit.

Step 6: These are the three pieces of cardstock all cut and folded.
Step 7: Press the front of the cardstock into the snap on the front of the box to make an impression. This will be your guide as to where to punch a hole.



Step 8: Using the dimple you just created as a guide, punch a hole with the 1/8" circle punch for the snap to fit through.





Step 9: Apply the decoupage finish to the bottom of the box and then place the 5.5" x 1.5" piece of cardstock over the glue.

Step 10: Apply the decoupage finish to the left side of the box and then place the 3.75" x 1.5" piece of cardstock over the glue.

Step 11: Apply the decoupage finish to the the front, side and back of the box and wrap the remaining piece of cardstock over the glue.






Step 12: Punch out a new colored tab for each divider with the Rounded Tab Punch. Then adhere a punched tab on each divider.

Step 13: Embellish with ribbon and oval punches. I purposely did not put a label on the white oval for this box because I think the recipient should get to choose what it says. The box holds index cards, so it would be good for receipts, recipes, and notes.

Challenge Card

At our cape cod stamping weekend, Pat issued a limited supply challenge a la splitcoast stampers. The challenge was to make a card with only Green Galore, Rose Red, Regal Rose, Whisper White & Basic Black card stock. We were also limited to the following stamp sets: You Make Me Happy, Happy Everything, Polka Dots & Petals and the following backgrounds Paisley, Aida Cloth & Print Pattern.

I chose to use You Make Me Happy since I don't own that set at home. Kim brought some page maps, which provided the layout for my card. I'm not sure which month it was though, but I can tell that I will be a page map junkie really soon! The large daisy was cut out and then popped up with a Stampin' Dimensional.

If I was at home, I would have used my Stamp-a-majig to place the centers on the flowers. You can see that I missed on one of them when I tried to eyeball it. But, it was a fun challenge and I am happy with the result.

This is a super cute stamp set! I love all of the texture that comes molded right into each stamp. So thanks for the challenge Pat!

Receipts Box

Wow! I just got home from a fabulous 4-day weekend spent stamping with 18 of my closest friends. :) We swapped, ate, shoebox swapped, ate, stamped, ate, laughed, ate -- you get the picture!

I shared most of my swaps for this trip last week, but I saved my 3-d swap for last. Here's the before picture:

I got this idea from my fellow Connecticut stamper, Cathy. The little boxes were $1 each at target in the office supply section. I adhered the designer paper to the boxes with Royal Coat Decoupage Finish. It's like Mod Podge. I thought it would be cute to keep in my car or purse to organize business receipts until I had a chance to file them at home. The word Receipts was printed in the SU Harry Paul font from one of the font cds. Then I used the two oval punches to punch out the word and its layer. I finished them off with a little ribbon, just like Cathy did.

For the inside, I used the new Stampin' Up! rounded tab punch from the Spring Mini Catalog to cover the original tabs and make things a little more colorful.

I'll try to put a tutorial together with all the measurements this week. Be a little patient with me though! I'm really tired from my crazy stamping weekend and I have a pile of laundry to get through!

Bunny Latch

This is my shoebox swap card for the SSUS Cape Cod retreat this weekend. I was totally inspired by one of my stamp club friends, Hannah. She made the cutest big buckle card using the bunny hugs stamp set that night!

Paisley Purse

After making the colorful purses yesterday, I decided to make a Vera Bradley knock-off. The paisley stamp in Polka Dots & Paisley is just perfect for this! It's really hard to see in the picture, but I stamped the little flower from Polka Dots & Petals in white craft ink in between the paisleys.

Designer Purse

It's all Debbie Olson's fault really. I didn't originally order Polka Dots & Petals from the Spring Mini catalog because I thought I didn't really need another circle stamp set. But, when I saw this cute card by Debbie I just had to have it. Combine Debbie's card, the last week's color challenge and Julie Ebersole's awesome purse template and you get something like this.

I was inspired by the colorful purses that seem to be in style now by Dooney & Bourke, Louis Vuitton and Coach. I figure if you can't own a $1000 purse, you can at least make colorful purse cards!

The monogram has been covered in crystal effects to make it look more like an insignia. Inside is "Happy Birthday" from cheery chat. This would be especially cute with a gift card inside.

Color Combo Challenge 103

Sparkly Doodles

It has been a while since I've pulled out the Pearl Ex. I love the look, but I don't always feel like cleaning up the shimmery mess that results in my stamp room.

But, I am going to be swapping with a very special group of stampers next weekend and I figured if they weren't worth it, then who is? So, I started by stamping the smaller doodle randomly in VersaMark ink all over my regal rose card stock. Then I dabbed my paint brush in the Flamingo Pink Pearl Ex and little tapped it all over the stamped doodles. For a great tutorial check out Poppin' Pearls on splitcoast stampers.

After I had my shimmering background, I decided to use this week's sketch challenge to finish off my card. I don't think I've ever done a sketch challenge on time, so this is great progress! This is sketch 115.

Of course, the card is much more sparkly in person. The scanner doesn't really pick up on it at all.

Snappy Birthday

Phew! I finished my spring mini Control Freaks swaps just under the wire this quarter. But they are now safely on their way to Nebraska where they will meet the other 42 wonderful swapper's cards before making their trip back to me in Connecticut.

The layout of this card is from sketch challenge 54. It's an oldie but a goodie. To create the sand dune, I used the rotary blade in the cutter kit. I've used the distressor tool a lot before, but this was my first experience with the rotary blade. Let me tell you, it was super easy and I had to make 42 of these. :)

To give it a little more sandy look, I used a sahara sand marker in the color spritzer tool. Once again, so easy, but I love the look.

Finally I stamped Mr. Crab on whisper white card stock with basic black classic ink. I also created a mask for him so that I could stamp the party hat and make it look like it was sitting on his head with his beady little eyes sticking out front. When it came time to color Mr. Crab in, I watercolored with Really Rust. It was just the right mix of red and orange!
